Atlassian User Group: August 2014

After a break of six months due to an overlap with May’s major Road Trip event, the Atlassian User Group (AUG) returned to Sydney last week. And it returned with a bang as the biggest turnout yet - more than 130 people - came to mingle with fellow users and talk all things Atlassian. We were especially excited about this AUG as it was our first as a Platinum Expert!

After loading up on conversation, food and beer it was time to break out. This was an opportunity for users to pick an area of interest - JIRA, Confluence, Stash/Bitbucket, Customer Platform, etc - and talk directly to Atlassian product managers, engineers and Experts like us.

This was followed by the evening’s main presentation from Michael Knight, senior support engineer at Atlassian, who gave a preview of his ‘Deflect Tickets and Stop Interruptions for Your IT Teams’ talk which will feature at Summit (more details below). His own description sums it up as “how the build engineering team at Atlassian uses JIRA Service Desk, Confluence Questions, HipChat, and the Knowledge Base Blueprint in Confluence to scale the support for the wildly growing number of developers”. (This is very relevant to Atlassian’s own situation as they featured in Time magazine this week under the headline 10 Companies That Are Hiring Like Crazy Right Now).

Normally time is given for an end user presentation, but for this event more time was allocated to networking. We love the networking element of the AUGs as it’s always fascinating to talk to people about the new and different ways they’re using Atlassian’s software tools and a great way to offer suggestions as to how they might be able to get enhanced benefits from their platforms.

With the strongest turnout ever, it‘s pretty clear that the Atlassian user community is currently thriving in Sydney.

Following hot on the heels of the AUG is Atlassian’s Summit Preview in Sydney which offers a sneak peek of the September’s main event in the USA. There are nearly 30 presentations across the day covering Platform & APIs, IT Service Teams, Software Teams and Collaboration Teams. In short: something for everyone. As for Summit 2014 itself, a few faces from GLiNTECH will be making the trip over to San Jose for the first time and are, needless to say, very much looking forward to it. We’ll be sure to post more info about the experience once the team is back on the ground.

Bringing things back to a local level again, the next AUG is on Thursday 13th November. It’s the last one of the year which is always good fun and attracts a great turnout, so RSVP your spot early.
