Atlassian announced version 5.8 of Confluence back in early June of this year. In the previous version (5.7), Altassian implemented a new file management experience, which supported the upload, comment, edit, and resolve stages of the collaboration cycle. With the newest version of Confluence, Atlassian have added some new ways to present this work to teams as well as other useful updates for file management, page displaying, and security.
That being said, here are the major additions and enhancements to the new Confluence update:
The new presentation mode supports any file stored in Confluence, giving users the ability to go through PDFs of project plans, advance through Powerpoints, or simply display budgets in Excel spreadsheets. To access this new feature and display the file in fullscreen mode, in the preview mode, select Start presentation. There are also new controls and keyboard shortcuts to make navigating slides and pages much easier.
Recover deleted files
For further protection user content, Atlassian has added a safety net when you accidentally erase a file: all deleted content now goes directly to the trash where a space administrator can easily restore them. Simply go to Space Tools > Content Tools > Trash to access the files. Many businesses will certainly find this added peace-of-mind very useful.
Preview or download from the attachments macro
Users now have the choice to preview or download from the attachments macro with the newly added preview button. This allows users to preview files as well as the ability to simply click the file name to download it.
More displaying options for pages
The Content by Label macro gives users the option to display a dynamic list of related pages using the same page label. With the new 5.8 update, users now have more options relating to which pages they can display:
All or some pages from a specific page tree
Pages that contain specific text within the title or page content
Pages with a combination of labels
It achieves this by allowing users to build their own query just by adding fields with the Confluence Query Language (CQL). In addition, users can search for the exact pages they want to display in the macro’s settings dialog while having a preview of that page. This makes it easier to perform tweaks and amendments if need be.
Improvements to index pages
The Page Properties and Page Properties Report macro collaborate to show a summary of information from one page on another page, such as indexing a team’s project meeting notes for easy reference on one page. With Confluence 5.8, users can now report on pages with multiple or different labels, or only include pages under a specific parent page.
Updates to table functionality
Users can now add a numbering column to their table (doesn't work with documentation theme), which automatically numbers all the rows in a table. Previously, users had to manually number them, which can get incredibly time consuming when building larger tables.Other updates to table functionality:
Table header rows now stay at the top when viewing and scrolling through a page, making long tables much easier to read.
The ability to cut, copy, and paste buttons for columns.
