End of support for Internet Explorer 11

Microsoft unveiled Edge as the browser that would take the place of Internet Explorer (IE) in 2015. Since then, Internet Explorer 11 hasn't received any new major updates, or support considered vital by many modern web standards. In fact, Microsoft recently discouraged using and setting Internet Explorer 11 as your default browser. There has also been a marked decrease in IE 11 use across Atlassian Server, Cloud and Data Center products over the past few years.

On 23 September 2019, Atlassian announced that it would no longer offer support to Internet Explorer 11. At this time, they would also begin to introduce a host of new features that are no longer compatible with this browser. Atlassian chose this route because they wanted to be able to take advantage of more modern web standards. The goal was to improve the functionality of their products in order to provide the best customer experience possible.

Once Atlassian ends support for Internet Explorer 11, they intend to have a short grace period. During this grace period, most features will continue to work in this browser. However, this will be a temporary grace period, and Atlassian recommends that all of their customers who still use Internet Explorer 11 work towards switching over to a more modern browser in order to get the best experience possible.

When These Changes Take Place

Support will end for all Atlassian customers as different times for the different features. Atlassian projects these changes to take place:

  • Atlassian Cloud- For any and all Atlassian cloud products, support has a slated end date of 31 March 2020.

  • Atlassian Server and Data Center - For people who use the Atlassian Server and Data Center, the last version of support for Internet Explorer 11 has a release date ranging between September 2019 and March 2020. Any versions after this will not have support. There are several confirmed versions in the table below.

Atlassian Apps - For apps like Questions with Confluence, Portfolio for Jira and Team Calendars for Confluence, they will continue to support Internet Explorer 11 until 31 March 2020. They'll support this browser until the last version of Confluence or Jira reaches their end of life.
